Is Search Engine Optimization Really Needed?

When an offline business starts advertising online, the first thing they have to learn about is search engine optimization, or SEO. An entrepreneur starting an online business for the first time also has to learn the ropes of SEO before they can see true success. Yet, SEO is time consuming and takes constant effort, which has many people wondering whether it is actually necessary.

The first thing most people learn about search engine optimization is the placement of keywords within the text of a blog or website. This is fairly simple to do and can actually guide the content to be presented on a websites so you aren't drawing from a complete blank every time you add something new.

Unfortunately, what all entrepreneurs and business owners learn sooner or later is that keyword placement within content is not enough. That is just the very tip of the SEO mountain and there is much more to be learned.

This is when SEO becomes time consuming, tedious, and sometimes confusing. This is when some people give up and others hire professionals to do it for them.

The Virtual World without SEO

So, what happens if you just give up and decide you aren't going to do SEO at all. It's confusing. You don't have the time. You just aren't going to do it anymore! Now what?

The first thing you will notice is that any traffic you already have will gradually dwindle away. The second thing you will notice is that you aren't drawing in new traffic to the website. Essentially, your online business or marketing campaign is dying a slow, miserable death.

What's going on here?

The problem is you aren't communicating with the search engines. Google, Yahoo, MSN and all the other powerful search engines are a critical key to the success of any online business or marketing campaign. If you aren't telling them what they need to know about your site on a consistent basis they are going to do one of two things:

1. Ignore you so it's as if you don't exist.

2. Rank you so low that very few people will ever stumble across your website.

Most people search for information through the search engines. It is the job of these engines to keep all known websites ranked and categorized so the best sites are presented to their customers every time they search. If you aren't communicating with the search engines you can't be recommended because they don't know where to categorize you or how valuable your content may be.

Simply put: you DO need SEO!

SEO Results

When you work with the search engines and continually work with search engine optimization you will see your business or marketing campaign skyrocket. It does take some time and there are rules that seem to change all the time so it can be confusing. Yet, the slow miserable death that comes from ignoring SEO is far worse than the time taken to keep your SEO plan going.

If you are confused by SEO spend some time researching or bring in the help of a professional in the field until you learn more. This is one aspect of doing business online that you simply cannot afford to ignore. This is isn't something you can just give up on.
